Surf Sessions is pleased to announce the release of Term 1 Grom and Junior Surfing Development programs.

With the success of the young surfers in last year’s programs we have expanded the groups to have a number of different focuses for every age, ability and gender.

New programs this term will now cater for High Performance SurfGroms, Junior Girls and Junior Boy. Coaching will be held at Ocean Grove and 13th Beach when conditions are smaller.

All programs strive to enhance the surfers overall confidence in the surf. Surfers will progress through a range of set tasks that will increase their understanding of the biomechanics of good surfing. Each surfer will then work individually with their coach to apply these techniques to their own surfing during the classes and in their own time.

The classes will be weekly during term 1 to accelerate the surfer’s progress or in the case of the High Performance groups to also assist surfers with their contest preparation and strategies around key surfing events during the term.

Should you wish to discuss these programs in any manner please email Surf Sessions, info@surfsessions.com.au and we will be happy to assist you further.

To book into this program visit the Surf Sessions SurfGroms website: http://www.surfgroms.com/surfgroms-18763/

Surf Sessions recently welcomed legendary Victorian surfer Tony Ray when he came to coach the Surf Sessions Junior Development program. Amongst the group was a bunch of Victoria’s next generation performance surfers and Tony conveyed plenty of tips gained from his many years competing on the World Surfing Tour and in later years his big waves surfing focus.

Having defeated the now 11 times world champion Kelly Slater on 3 occasions and also coming runner up in the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, the kids were very grateful for Tony coming to the program and so was Surf Sessions. Tony will be visiting the team again in the near future to catch up with the kids and to see their progress.

Collier was in devastating form all event and only rode 3 waves in the final to take it out. Collier had a tight grip on the close final and was the stand out surfer on the final day of competition.

“I just tried to stay quiet in the final and wait for the best waves available”

“I didn’t compete in the first round so I’m stoked to take this one out and still be in the running for the title”

Simon has been assisting surfers with their own surfing and is an excellent mentor for surfers wanting to get the most out of their time in the water.

Strapper Surfboards recently hosted a Stand Up Paddle Demo day Surfers Walking On Water At Cosy Corner! Surf Sessions were there providing professional coaching for all new enthusiasts to the sport.
Rich Bartle of Strapper Surf has a passion for Stand Up Paddling, his key objectives were to promote SUP safety, engage with the local community, and let people demo the latest 2011 boards from Paddle Surf Hawaii and Naish International – 2 of the biggest players in the market.

Cam Lamperd & Matt Lumley in Coaching Action (Photos: Sea Me Surf Photography)

The crowd gathered in anticipation as they had seen the 2011 models in magazines and on the web, but now was the opportunity to actually get your hands on the real deal. The variety of people attending was amazing; short boarders, longboarders, stand up paddlers, mums, dads and kids. They all had beaming smiles ready and eager to get their hands on a board and a paddle.
Everyone was asked to register as safety was at the top of the agenda, and the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club was onboard to assist with RIB supervision of the event. Each participant was provided with either a yellow “Play It Safe By The Water” rash vest for those who were more experience or a blue rash vest for new comers to the sport. To further enhance safety, Surf Session Surf Coaching provided all new comers with a free lesson giving them a solid grounding in both paddling skills and etiquette in the water.
Cam Lamperd and Matt Lumley from Surf Sessions ran 4 group lessons on the afternoon and were stoked to see how many people wanted to learn and how keen they were on the sport. Cam said “After each lesson I told each group to catch 1 or 2 waves and then head to the beach” however each time Cam, Matt and the rest of the coaches had to round up the group and drag them back to beach as they were having way too much fun.

In some great 2-3 feet offshore waves at Jan Juc, 13th Beach Boardriders surfed one of their best ever State Teams Titles but were narrowly defeated by Torquay and final event winners Phillip Island. In fact during the last tag team 13th held the lead a number of times but when the final siren sounded it was Peninsula 17 points, 13th 29 points, Torquay 30 points and Philip Island 32 points.

13th Beach Boardriders Team for 2010 & Surf Sessions coaches / surfers Cam Lamperd & Simon Collier

One of the most positive results from the day was the high standard of surfing from each team member, which put 13th in the title hunt. Stand out performance came from Simon Collier who also had the events highest single wave score with a mind blowing 9 point ride in the final and Banjo Harfield for taking out the Junior final of the Power Heats with a very professional and explosive surfing approach. The coming years are looking very promising and Surf Sessions coaches Cam Lamperd and Simon Collier will be working closely with the team to assist in their surfing performances.
